Biden’s Executive Order on AI Safety and Security

The US government has issued an executive order focusing on AI safety and security. As part of this order, tech companies are now required to share their AI system test results with the government prior to making them public. To ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI, the government is setting strict testing guidelines. These guidelines encompass measures against potential AI threats, the watermarking of AI-generated content to counteract fraud and deepfakes, and the establishment of standards to prevent the creation of AI-assisted bioweapons. The order not only emphasizes the importance of ensuring AI systems are safe, secure, and reliable but also touches upon broader issues such as privacy, civil rights, consumer protection, and workers’ rights. Implementation tasks are set to be carried out within a timeframe ranging from 90 to 365 days. Additionally, the order underscores the ethical use of AI within the military and intelligence sectors and highlights the pressing need for comprehensive data privacy legislation. It also addresses the potential biases in AI, emphasizing the importance of preventing AI systems from perpetuating existing prejudices.
